Generator Installations and Upgrades

Weirgrove have considerable experience in generator installations, providing engineering, design and commissioning support to contractors or providing turn-key solutions with our parent company Underwoods Engineered Products Ltd. We have provided both permanent and temporary solutions for generators and load bank installations at MV and LV power levels.

Whether it is a simple stand-alone Automatic Mains Failure (AMF) generator or multiple generator system synchronising to grid mains supply we have reference installations and in-house designs for protection and control systems. We are also conversant with protection schemes to the later G59/2 and G59/3 standards.

We are often consulted for our expertise in the requirements of local network operator’s (DNOs) for embedded generation with mains paralleling capability. These installations may be short term paralleling systems for no-break transfer or long term paralleling systems for co-generation or energy export schemes. On behalf of our clients we have successfully negotiated embedded generation connection agreements with DNOs and carried out subsequent witnessed testing programs.

Most standby generator systems accumulate very low running hours in a lifetime of normal  operation and we have successfully retrofitted new protection and control systems to several installations to prolong the useful life of diesel engines, alternators, switchgear and mechanical systems. Our retrofit packages usually upgrade the performance of generators and, if required, we can investigate increasing their capability by adding mains paralleling functionality.
